Bicycle History: Orbea

Orbea is one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world. This year they are celebrating their 176th anniversary. The company began in 1840 as a rifle gun producer and didn't start making bicycles until 1931. It's located in Mallabia, Basque country in Spain. Most of their higher end bicycles are made and designed in Portugal. They were the first company to make a full carbon road bike in 2003. Orbea have had some very famous riders ride for them in the past; riders like Iban Mayo, Samuel Sanchez, Mikel Nieve, and Pedro Delgado. Of course being a basque company, Euskatel-Euskadi was a cycling team for nearly twenty years and everyone of those years they road Orbea bicycles and had great successes from 1994-2013. The Orca is Orbea's road bike and the word "Orca" has no resemblance to a killer whale. The "Or" is the first two letters in Orbea's name and the "ca" is for carbon. Now the yes Orbea isn't the world's oldest bicycle company, that honor goes to Bianchi, they have been making bicycles for over 130 years, Orbea has only been doing that for over 80 years. However, Orbea is still a fantastic bicycle company that keeps rolling out bicycles every year for all of us to ride and to enjoy.
